Phenomenological description interprets the invariant structure exhibited by the lifeworld and its events of meaning. " Phenomenological psychology is a science that is dedicated to understanding behavior in its total everyday context rather than to explaining it in terms of its objective conditions; precisely therein lies its hermeneutic character (compare Wilhelm Dilthey).  Chapters 5 through 7 focus on meaning, from a Gestalt theoretical perspective in particular, and Chapters 8 through 11 on meaningoriented behavior.

All in all, then, phenomenological psychology is a hermeneutic method for clarifying the invariant structure of human behavior in terms of the meanings with which that behavior is preoccupied from the first.  1 Phenomenological psychology pursues its aim, however, in view of the total context of such behaviors in everyday life; in view of them, that is, as activities of a someone who lives for the meanings with which that someone forms a single interwovenness (a la MerleauPonty).  Facts are meanings, and so are values.

187).  401).  Not bound by the ideology of objectivism— human behavior is neither inside nor outside objectively, and neither are its meanings—phenomenology is free to portray meanings where it finds them; namely, beyond behavior as that toward which behavior aims, beyond behavior in their sheer otherness to behavior, beyond behavior with a life and hold of their own. Phenomenology takes quite seriously experiences in which ideas hit people, for example, like the experiences of an Einstein, who is said to have had to use care shaving lest he cut himself when taken by surprise by new ideas.
